Monty Python: The Galaxy Song

Having trouble with big numbers? Feeling depressed about English or the annoying little things in every day life? Boost your English and raise your spirits with this Monty Python classic.

大きな数字に問題がありますか? 毎日の生活の中で、英語や厄介なことについてうんざりしていますか? このモンティ・パイソンの古典であなたの英語力を高め、精神を高めましょう。

This song contains some easier, moderate and longer numbers – see how well you can do. Numbers in English can be particularly hard for Japanese students as the counting units are a bit different.

数字の単位が少し違うので、英語の数字は日本人学生にとって特に難しいかもしれません。英語で一万がありません。

Listen to the song and complete the lyrics below

The first paragraph is a nice little warm-up… The second one is more hard-core with bigger figures, so you might need to listen to it a few times!

(spoken)
Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown,
And things seem hard or tough,
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft,
And you feel that you\'ve had quite eno-o-o-o-o-ough,

Just remember that you\'re standing on a planet that\'s evolving
And revolving at (a) ________ miles an hour.
It\'s orbiting at (b) ______ miles a second, so it\'s reckoned,
The sun that is the source of all our power.
Now the sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see,
Are moving at a (c) _____________ miles a day,
In the outer spiral arm, at (d) ____________ miles an hour,
Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way.

Our galaxy itself contains a (e) __________ __________stars;
It\'s a (f) __________ ___________ light-years side to side;
It bulges in the middle (g) ___________ __________ light-years thick,
But out by us it\'s just (h) _________ ___________ light-years wide.
We\'re (i) __________ __________ light-years from Galactic Central Point,
We go \'round every (j) ______ __________ ___________ years;
And our galaxy itself is one of (k) __________ of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

(waltz)

Our universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding,
In all of the directions it can whiz;
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
(l) __________ ___________ miles a minute and that\'s the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you\'re feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth;
And pray that there\'s intelligent life somewhere out in space,
\'Cause there\'s bugger all down here on Earth!
