New Year\’s Resolutions

Have you made New Year\’s resolutions yet?

This year, I\’m going to exercise more, I\’m going to read more books, and I might also take up a new sport.

Today we\’re looking at how to talk about intentions and future plans. Future tenses in English can be quite difficult – today we will be looking at \’be going to + [verb]\’, which is used to express intentions.

If you have an idea, an intention, you can say \’I\’m going to [save] money, I\’m going to [get] fit\’

This structure has nothing to do with actually going anywhere, it does not really mean 歩くor 行く! It\’s more an equivalent of つもりです。

If we use the examples from the picture above, we can say: I\’m going to drink less, I\’m going to quit smoking, I\’m going to enjoy life…

Negative form: I\’m not going to eat sugary snacks

Question form: Are you really going to quit smoking? How are you going to do it? Are you going to join a gym? Which one are you going to join?

Of course, we can use this structure in all sorts of situations, not just with New Year\’s resolutions.

For intentions that are a little less certain, you can use \’I might + verb\’: I might take up karate, I might join a dance class, I might go to Hawaii…
