Cheers! Belgium beer added to U.N. cultural heritage list

ベルギービール、ユネスコ無形文化遺産に登録

beer

From brown ales to golden pilsners, Belgian beer is enjoyed worldwide. Now, the United Nations\’ heritage body has accepted an application from the German-speaking part of the country to add Belgium\’s brewing and beer-drinking culture to a list of traditions worth protecting.

The country is home to nearly 200 breweries making 1,500 different beers. The application said beer brewing improves the well-being of Belgian people by stimulating the economy, promoting local products and strengthening social ties.

In Belgium, Beer is also used for cooking and for creating products like beer-washed cheese, and can be paired with foods to complement flavours, UNESCO said on its website.

\”This beer culture is really deep for Belgians,\” said Isabelle Wekymans, culture minister for the German-speaking region.
