Hello all!
In today\’s post from マイケルズイングリッシュスクール天王寺英会話, we go beyond \’good\’ and \’bad\’ and look at ways of expanding your vocabulary. In class discussions, I often ask my students to put these basic words aside for a while and think harder to come up with more specific synonyms.
Be more precise!
\’Good\’ and \’bad\’ give a vague indication of how you feel about things, but you could also try to be more precise and colour your speech with nuances.
Let\’s learn some synonyms:
If you\’re talking about something good in general, you could say:
brilliant, interesting, enjoyable, delightful, fantastic…
If you\’re talking about something bad in general, you could say:
disappointing, boring, awful, horrible, terrible…
Though be careful, some of these are stronger in meaning.
If you\’re talking about food, you could say:
Good | Bad |
Delicious | Tasteless |
Tasty | Bland |
Yummy (informal) | Disappointing |
Too dry | |
Too greasy | |
… |
Making adjectives stronger without \’very\’
Another way of enriching your vocabulary is to choose precise adjectives that are synonyms of \’very …\’
For example:
very beautiful = gorgeous
very angry = furious
very cold = freezing
very hot = sweltering, boiling (informal)
very hungry = starving
very big = massive
Try a few of these in class next time!
