Idioms: night owl or early bird?

Today at マイケルズイングリッシュスクール夕陽ヶ丘の英会話 we are learning idioms about time habits. Are you a night owl or an early bird?

A night owl

If you like to stay up until late at night, you are a night owl.

Example: My friend is a night owl and usually works or reads until late into the night.

An early bird

If you get up early in the morning, or arrive early before competitors, you are an early bird. It comes from the saying \’the early bird catches the worm\’, equivalent to 早起きは三文の徳.

You can often see this phrase in shops or special offers, for example \’early bird special\’, which usually means that you will get a discount or special offer if you buy an item in advance. Around Christmas time, you can often see \’early bird specials\’, if you do your Christmas shopping in November for instance.

So are you a night owl or an early bird? Are there early bird specials in your country too?

Look forward to another mini-lesson next week at マイケルズイングリッシュスクール夕陽ヶ丘英会話!
