Frequently used Internet slang and abbreviations
Hello all!
In today’s mini-lesson from 大阪夕陽ヶ丘英会話 we are looking at some common abbreviations and popular internet slang. If you read forums in English or exchange texts with English-speaking friends, you might have come across these little words and wondered what they mean.
We’re here to help! Here is a sample of internet and texting abbreviations.
AKA – Also Known As
ASAP – As Soon As Possible
BRB – Be Right Back (=I’ll be right back)
BTW – By The Way
IDK – I Don’t Know
JK – Just Kidding
LOL – Laughing Out Loud (also: ROFL – Rolling On the Floor Laughing)
IMO / IMHO – In My Opinion / In My Humble Opinion
RSVP – Répondez S’il Vous Plait. It’s actually the French phrase for ‘please reply’, but it has become accepted in English and is frequently used for replies to invitations.
YOLO – You Only Live Once. It is used to justify doing something idiotic or embarrassing. It is also used ironically as commentary on someone else doing something idiotic.
THX – Thanks
TTYL – Talk To You Later
TYVM – Thank You Very Much
YW – You’re Welcome
XOXO – Hugs and Kisses
