A Rabbit Named Peter
Everyone knows Peter Rabbit, the famous character from Beatrix Potter\’s delightful little children\’s books, which she wrote and illustrated over a hundred years ago. A new feature adaptation, coming to theatres in Japan on May 18th, is testament to the timeless nature of her work. And since we have mentioned nature, we need to talk about the Lake District.
The Lake District
Beatrix Potter was not only a writer and an illustrator, she was also a natural scientist and conservationist. Originally from London, she fell in love with the Lake District where she and her family vacationed in the summer. She eventually moved to a farmhouse in Hill Top, Near Sawrey, Cumbria.
Her books became popular, and, with the money, she purchased vast tracts of land to keep them from the developers. She was indeed a huge supporter of the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty and left the Trust almost all her property upon her death.
Beatrix Potter & Michael\’s English School\’s Students
Japanese people love Peter Rabbit and his friends. An article appeared on the BBC which explains the phenomenon. Some of our students at Michael\’s English School enjoy studying Beatrix Potter\’s books and her life and legacy over tea and cake. This is just one of many engaging activities we offer every week.
