Hello again, and welcome to our special Christmas edition of 羽曳野古市英会話の英国音楽!
The Mediæval Bæbes
The Mediæval Bæbes are an all-female musical ensemble with a passion for medieval music.
Their albums feature poetry set to music (the lyrics on the track played during the opening sequence of the 2006 BBC four-part miniseries The Virgin Queen are an adaptation of a poem written by Elizabeth I), traditional songs, and some original compositions.
The Bæbes sing not only in modern English but also in Middle English, Cornish, Welsh, Irish, Scottish English, Latin, French, Italian, Russian, Swedish, German, Manx Gaelic, Spanish, Bavarian, Provençal…
Some songs are genuine traditional pieces, others, modern songs arranged in a traditional manner. The recordings include traditional instruments as well as non-medieval instruments like the saxophone and electric guitar. The legendary John Cale of the Velvet Underground coproduced their third album Undrentide in 2000.
We share with you excerpts from their Christmas-themed 2003 album Mistletoe and Wine.
\”We Three Kings\”
Lyrics
\”We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
Born a King on Bethlehem\’s plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign
O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Prayer and praising, all men raising
Worship Him, God most high
Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes of life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb
O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
Glorious now behold Him arise
King and God and Sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia
Earth to heav\’n replies
O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light\”
\”Salva nos\” (Latin)
Lyrics (Latin)
\”Salva nos, stella maris
Et regina caelorum
Salva nos, stella maris
Et regina caelorum
Que pura deum paris
Salva nos, stella maris
Et per rubum signaris
Nesciens viri thorum
Salva nos, stella maris
Et regina caelorum
O virgo specialis
Salva nos, stella maris
Sis nobis salutaris
Imperatrix caelorum
Salva nos, stella maris
Et regina caelorum
Tu mater expers paris
Salva nos, stella maris
Manna celeste paris
Et panem angelorum
Salva nos, stella maris
Et regina celorum
O parens expers maris
Salva nos, stella maris
Partu non violaris
Paris sanctum sanctorum
Salva nos, stella maris
Et regina celorum
Celeste manna paris
Salva nos, stella maris
Lux cecis, dux ignaris
Solamen angelorum
Salva nos, stella maris
Et regina caelorum
Salva nos, stella maris
Et regina caelorum\”
English translation: \”Save us\”
\”Save us, star of the sea
and queen of heaven
Save us, star of the sea
and queen of heaven
who is pure and bore god
Save us, star of the sea
and by bush indicated
nescient of man’s bed
Save us, star of the sea
and queen of heaven
O special virgin
Save us, star of the sea
Be our salvation
Empress of heaven
Save us, star of the sea
and queen of heaven
You mother without equal
Save us, star of the sea
Heavenly manna coequal
and bread of angels
Save us, star of the sea
and queen of heaven
O parent without mate
Save us, star of the sea
by birth not maculate
you bore the holiest of holy
Save us, star of the sea
and queen of heaven
Heavenly manna (you) bore
Save us, star of the sea
Light of the blind, leader of the ignorant
Solace of the angels
Save us, star of the sea
and queen of heaven
Save us, star of the sea
and queen of heaven\”
